Regency framed Chinese bird painting
Regency framed Chinese bird painting
7721
A Regency framed Chinese rice paper painting of two birds in a verre églomisé mount, circa 1810.
Verre églomisé is a decorative technique in which the reverse of a sheet of glass is gilded, painted or engraved to create a design viewed through the glass. The name derives from the 18th-century French decorator Jean-Baptiste Glomy, although the technique itself dates back to antiquity.
Gold or silver leaf is applied to the back of the glass, often combined with painted details or areas scratched through the gilding. Particularly fashionable in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, verre églomisé was used for mirrors, picture frames, clock cases, signs and decorative panels.
Antique examples remain highly collectable today.
