A rare and wonderfully evocative set of *Knock 'Em Down* skittles, dating to circa 1920 and complete with its balls and original box. The set offers a charming glimpse of early 20th-century domestic recreation, when simple, well-made games provided entertainment for family gatherings and social occasions.
Each skittle is carefully turned and retains the appealing character of a period toy or parlour game. Presented together with the original box, the set has the completeness and visual impact that collectors seek, while the surviving packaging gives it a particularly strong sense of authenticity and history. Complete sets of this type are increasingly difficult to find, especially when they retain both their accessories and original presentation.
Its provenance makes this example especially significant. The set was made by the Disabled Ex-Servicemen's Industries, later known as Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI). Established in the aftermath of the First World War, the organisation was created to support wounded and disabled servicemen as they returned to civilian life, providing healthcare, vocational training, and meaningful employment. Objects such as this were therefore not only made as entertaining household goods, but also represented an important social enterprise supporting former service personnel.
At approximately 14 cm high, the skittles are compact enough for tabletop play while retaining a satisfyingly sculptural presence when displayed. A delightful and increasingly scarce survivor, this set would make a compelling addition to a collection of antique games, early 20th-century toys, British social-history objects, or Royal British Legion Industries pieces.
