Star sapphires are a unique variety of corundum gemstones known for their remarkable asterism-a star-like pattern that appears on the surface when viewed under a direct light source. This optical phenomenon is caused by needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned within the stone.
Star sapphires are most commonly found in shades of blue, but they can also appear in pink, gray, black, and purple. The most prized star sapphires exhibit a distinct, symmetrical six-rayed star. These gems are often cut en cabochon (a smooth, rounded shape) to best display the asterism. Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand are key sources.
