A wonderfully atmospheric acrylic and nylon-thread pendant lamp designed by Paul Secon for Sompex, circa 1960. With its light, airy construction and softly sculptural form, this iconic mid-century design creates an exceptional play of texture, shadow, and illumination when lit.
The shade is formed from an intricate web of fine nylon thread, strengthened and held in place with acrylic resin. The resulting structure appears almost weightless, yet has a wonderfully tactile, hand-worked quality. Its open construction allows light to filter through the threads in every direction, casting a warm, diffuse glow and an ever-changing pattern of fine shadows across the surrounding space. Photographs only hint at this effect: the lamp is particularly striking in person when illuminated.
Paul Secon's thread lamps became emblematic of the experimental, optimistic design language of the 1960s. Made for Sompex, this example combines the period's interest in new materials with a distinctly handcrafted character, making it equally at home in a mid-century interior, a contemporary living space, or as a sculptural statement above a dining table, in a hallway, or within a reading corner.
The lamp is fitted with a chrome lamp holder and white twisted fabric flex, completing its clean and understated presentation. A beautifully expressive piece of 1960s lighting design, offering both decorative impact and a wonderfully soft quality of light.
