A 19th century French silver plate Rococo style wine strainer.

Wine strainers have been used for centuries to remove sediment, cork fragments, and impurities from wine before serving. Early examples appeared in ancient Rome, where bronze and silver strainers accompanied elaborate drinking rituals.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, strainers became especially important as aged wines often contained heavy sediment from bottle fermentation and storage. Georgian and Victorian households commonly used decorative silver or pewter strainers, sometimes fitted into elegant wine funnels lined with muslin. In the late 19th century, mass production made wine strainers more widely available in hotels and middle-class homes.

Today, antique wine strainers are valued both as functional barware and collectible decorative objects.
