A 19th century Japanese blue and white porcelain pierced panel incense burner.

Japanese porcelain incense burners, known as *kōro*, have been produced for centuries as both functional objects and works of art. Originating in the Edo period (1603-1868) and influenced by earlier Chinese ceramics, they were used in Buddhist temples, tea ceremonies, and domestic settings for the burning of incense.

Fine examples were created by renowned kilns such as Arita, Imari, Satsuma, and Kutani, often decorated with hand-painted scenes, gilding, and intricate relief work. Designs range from simple tripod vessels to elaborate animal and mythological forms.

Today, antique Japanese porcelain incense burners are highly prized for their craftsmanship, symbolism, and decorative appeal.
