Kutani porcelain is a distinctive style of Japanese ceramics originating in the Kaga region during the 17th century. Early Ko-Kutani wares are celebrated for their bold designs and rich palette of green, yellow, blue, purple and red enamels.

Production was revived in the 19th century, when Kutani became increasingly elaborate and an important Japanese export. Meiji-period examples often feature exceptionally detailed decoration, including birds, flowers, landscapes, figures and scenes from Japanese history and mythology, sometimes enriched with gilding.

Kutani remains highly collectible, with values varying considerably according to age, quality, artist, decoration, condition and the presence of identifiable marks or signatures.
