An extremely rare and handsome pair of English Tudor andirons, or firedogs, dating to circa 1550. With their robust wrought-iron construction and richly coloured bronze finials, these exceptional hearth furnishings are striking survivals from the mid-16th century, a period in which domestic ironwork was made both for hard use and for impressive display.
Designed to support logs within the open hearth, the andirons would have formed an essential part of the fireplace in a substantial Tudor house. Their iron frames are built with the strength and simplicity required to withstand the heat and weight of a working fire, while the bronze finials introduce a note of status and refinement.
