A striking 19th-century Italian gilt gesso church pricket stand, later and sympathetically converted into an atmospheric table lamp. Originally intended to hold a devotional candle, the finely modelled stand retains its richly textured surface, aged gilding, and sculptural presence, bringing the drama of Italian ecclesiastical decoration into an interior setting.
The lamp is fitted with a custom-made Mariano Fortuny shade, whose softly pleated form provides a wonderful counterpoint to the ornate gilt gesso base. Together, the elements create a warm, theatrical light and a highly decorative silhouette-equally effective on a console, side table, desk, or bedside table.
The surface shows the expected patina, wear, and irregularity of antique gilt gesso, which contribute greatly to its character and authenticity. The later conversion has been carried out with care: the lamp has been rewired with brown twisted fabric flex, fitted with a 13-amp plug, and PAT tested.
